Week 2 - Sunday Storylines
A stunner in The Swamp, John Mateer's got moxie and StarkVegas is alive.
Instant Replay
What did we just watch?
A stunner in The Swamp - USF shocked the college football world Saturday evening, knocking off 13th-ranked Florida 18-16.
USF quarterback Byrum Brown killed the Gators, throwing for 200 yards and a touchdown, while adding 66 yards on the ground.
Florida looked wildly undisciplined, as evidenced by the back-breaking spitting ejection situation that extended the game-winning drive for USF.
Alex Golesh is a helluva coach, man.
StarkVegas is ALIVE - After surrendering a 17-point lead late in the fourth quarter, MSU looked cooked against Arizona State. Then something amazing happened.
MSU quarterback Blake Shapen nailed a streaking wide receiver on a broken coverage 58-yard touchdown to punctuate a 24-20 upset over No. 12 Arizona State.
This is a program-defining win for head coach Jeff Lebby. Kenny Dillingham might make his boys walk back to Arizona.
Iowa State does it again - Look, man, what is there left to say about Iowa State? The Cyclones just find ways to win.
Iowa looked awful on offense, and the Cyclones made enough plays when it mattered most to eek out a narrow victory after a bomb of a game-winning field goal.
Iowa is a major letdown, and Iowa State looks like a real threat in the Big 12.
The Fighting Illini find a way - Duke outgained Illinois and had fewer penalties. It did not matter, however, as the Blue Devils turned the ball over five times in the 45-19 loss.
Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer looked good, and the defense made plays when it needed to. I’m not sure Illinois can compete for a Big 10 title, but I think they’ll be a tough out in some big games.
Beau Knows - Hey y’all, Missouri found a quarterback. Beau Pribula was masterful in Missouri’s 42-31 Border War win over KU. He displayed a beautiful array of passes and finished with over 300 yards and three touchdowns.
Jalon Daniels is awesome, but he desperately needed some help in the run game.
I think Missouri could be a frisky team with that remaining schedule.
Baylor outguns SMU - Defense was optional in Baylor’s 48-45 2OT victory over SMU on Saturday afternoon.
Baylor quarterback Sawyer Robertson lit SMU up to the tune of 440 yards and two touchdowns. This Baylor offense is fun as hell to watch, man. The defense, on the other hand, needs some serious work if the Bears hope to hang in the Big 12.
Clemson survives a scare - After a lengthy lightning delay, Clemson fell behind 16-0 to Troy, and I got my hopes up for an upset. But the Tigers rattled off 27-straight and got out of there with the W.
Something is wrong with this Clemson team. This group is just not nearly as good as many thought it might be.
Kansas State, do we need to talk? - A week after flirting with disaster by nearly losing to North Dakota, Kansas State got picked off by a plucky Army team in Manhattan.
It’s time to hit the panic button if you’re a Wildcat fan. This team feels broken. It might be time for a coaching change after this season.
Quick Hits
I think UCLA QB Nico Iamalaeva is going to go down as the NIL era’s He Got Bread But At What Cost guy. His team stinks, and he made a big mistake leaving Knoxville.
JMU needs to stop playing two quarterbacks. I love me some Bob Chesney, but that was tough to watch on Friday night.
I think Ole Miss QB Austin Simmons is pretty overrated. He made a few bad mistakes against Kentucky, and if the Wildcats had half an offense, they might’ve made Ole Miss pay.
Michigan desperately needs some better wide receivers. Bryce Underwood is awesome, but he has no one to throw the ball to.
Thank you to Mike Gundy for complaining about being broke all week and then having Oregon hang 69 points on you. Chef’s kiss.
Stanford is truly a dreadful watch. I feel bad that someone like Andrew Luck has to be associated with whatever is going on out there.
LOL at Syracuse head coach Fran Brown making his team run windsprints after beating UCONN in overtime. Coaches around the world stood and applauded him for that move.
